Twitter, a rapidly growing micro-blogging website, is becoming a phenomena in the cyber-world with its estimated 6 million users. The website provides a new way to search for real-time information, and its continued growth may soon rival Google.

Newsy.com recently looked at how Twitter was used to find out real time information during the Mumbai attacks in India.

TechCrunch, a technology blog, praised twitter with the headline,

Its time to start thinking of Twitter as a search engine

and went on to offer this perspective ...

Twitter has reached critical mass. If something big is going on in the world, you can get information about it from Twitter. (TechCrunch)

The San Jose Mercury News backed that up with their story How Twitter could be a threat to Google, and gave this perspective.

The emergence of real-time search also certainly says a lot about us, and how our increasingly wired society is becoming ever more hyperkinetic. In this world, compared with Twitter, Google suddenly begins to feel old and plodding. (San Jose Mercury News)

ZDNet has the response from Eric Schmidt, Googles chief executive, who wasnt as enthusiastic about Twitter.

I view all of these as sort of poor mans e-mail systems, he said. (ZDNet)

A Business Week blog highlights an idea from a Twitter investor who says

You could get real power in the two working together somehow What would be best for everyone, Twitter, Google and the planet, is if Twitter was a real time feed to Google. (BusinessWeek)
