The inspiration for this song came after Ryan and I lost our first baby just ten weeks into the pregnancy. I was crying myself to sleep one night, picturing God in heaven holding my baby that I would never get to hold. I found myself saying to God, "I wish I was You." Almost four years later, we are just now getting around to fleshing it out. Ryan had the idea for the switch up in the second verse and chorus. We wrote the lyrics and music together, tag team style.

Sorry about the darkness. We record after our girls go to sleep. :)

LYRICS:

Verse 1:
Never wanted to hold the world in my hands
Never wanted to calm a raging sea
Never hoped that I would understand
The depths of all Your mysteries

Never wanted to carry people's pain
Never wanted to answer every prayer
I'm not one to ever stay the same
The weight of the world, I couldn't bear

Chorus:
But now I've had to say goodbye before I was ready to
And it hurts that on the other side, they're carrying on with you
Deep within Your arms you hold the one that I want to
And for the first time in my life...I wish I was you

Verse 2:
Always wanted to see the Face of Love
Always wanted to shed this broken flesh
Where fears and troubles finally are done
Let go of this world and I'll find rest

Chorus 2:
You'll never have to say goodbye before you're ready to
All the hurts we have on this side, will never again touch you
Deep within His arms, all things will be made new
More than ever before...I wish I was You

  • Thank you for letting us see your vulnerable side. I love this song.

  • Ryan & Char, this is so sincere (duh!) and moving. Thank you for going through what was probably a painful process to write this song.

  • I. have. no. words.

  • Wow. We tried and tried to get this to buffer on the road and when it finally did I was driving. I wanted to listen to it over and over but almost had to get off the road the first time. So beautiful. The writing, the singing and the playing are all so amazing!
