This is a short video explaining the instrument panel of one of the world's first jet fighter aircraft: the Heinkel He 162. Apart from the Messerschmitt Me 262 and Arado Ar 234 it was the only jet fighter that actually was used in combat by the German Luftwaffe in WWII(although no confirmed victories could be achieved before the war ended).

Some missions were flown in April and May 1945 and some Allied fighters (British Tempest and USAAF P-47 Thunderbolts) were met.

The instrument panel itself is a replica but all instruments are original. It is owned by a private collector who published more photos and information at www.swapey.com/militaria.

  • Hi merklereenactment,

You are absolutely right, the original He 162 panel was made out of plywood. Even the wings, landing gear doors, etc. of the He 162 were made out of wood. It was not only due to the shortage of aluminum but also because many small, dispersed carpenter's shops could produce wooden parts and were less affected by airraids on single targets. Cheers, Roger

  • So basicly this is a fake homemade panel with generic german aircraft guages.

  • The HE-162 (Volksjäger) came too late, and did not really fight the war. It did fight, but only a few times. Not like the ME-262. That was a earlier plane. AR-234 was a bomber.

  • Wonderful to see history preserved. Thank you.

  • there's one in the aerospace museum near where i live;l bourget,france.

    that plane amazes me!!!

one of the first to have an ejection seat

not to be put in rookie's hands though,as i've read

the volksjager turned out to be alte hasen jaeger

  • From contract signing to flight test ready in 70 days! Combat endurance was 20 minutes. The BMW 003 engine burned JP2 fuel.

  • Very nice. Thanks for that. I hope you manage to locate an original fuel guage.

I note that Eric Brown, the RN test pilot who conducted tests on captured Luftwaffe aircraft thought that the He 162 was a very capable aircraft. It's a fantastic bit of engineering especially when you consider the circumstances in which it was developed.

  • Man that was cool FIVE STARS
