Roland RE-501 problem

Pete's bust the tape on the Space Echo left in his care. Can anyone advise?

dude you can make your loop out of quarter in tape. i even have some friends who just take old eight tracks and snag the tape out them. also its normal for the tape to have that wierd slack loopy part. theres places on the net that tell you of the exact length if you loose the original tape. so yeah its not a big deal. you can also get special splice tape and a special splicer cutter as well.

The way the tape is curled up in there is normal, the little box you see in the corner is the packaging the replacement tapes used to come in. Once it's fed through the heads and you fire it up, the tape feeds out of that box completely. If theres still life to that snapped tape there's nothing wrong with splicing it back together. If the tape snapped the heads and spools probably need a cleaning. Good luck, they're great little units!

the hardest part i think is being afraid of wrecking them. they are pretty awesome hard to come by now.

I highly recommend using splicing tape as well. Stay away from clear store tape because it eats away at the tape. Buying a small bit of splicing tape will make your echos sound fuller and they won't cut out at the splice as much, meaning that you'll be able to oscillate better as well.
