My first attempt at turning the bassoon into an EWI. The latency is not really noticeable, although the glitches are since the pitch tracking is not superb. I would say the pitch tracking is similar to the pitch tracking you find on many guitar multi-effects pedals - it really reminds me of the tracking on the Boss ME-50B that I used to have.

  • Great demo! I am field testing the G2M live in a band setting. My problems are: 1. Adding a pre EQ (Boss GE-7) and 2. G2M audio is fading out during live performances. Is it the vibrations set by the bass and drums confusing the G2M? I am using Line HD500 FX loop, midi program controller for patch changes and G2M for (midi notes) with a JV vintage sound card. Check this live link demo: youtube.com /watch?v=OxFv5ALBYNo&feature=related

  • @harrisonbucknor I doubt with electric guitar pickups that the live sound is enough to confuse the G2M.

I think following the general guidelines are the best thing for you here: neck pickup for sure, and if it's possible to set your HD500 so that the preset you want to use the G2M for get the EQ before the loop to cut out all the highs going into the G2M. If there is any audio bleed from the PA or something simply turn down your volume knob on the guitar so less sound bleed happens.

  • @harrisonbucknor I guess at that point it just gets down to playing cleanly enough for the unit. I have since played pitch detection pedals that do better (the HD500 synth and harmony modules, if they're the same as on the M13, fall into this category) even when I'm not perfectly clean. See my other comments below.

  • Hey man, thanks for posting this video, its very informative. I would like to know if you think a tuned down guitar or a baritone guitar would be ok? I play drop B or drop C and use a lot of open strings. Do you think that would be too problematic?

  • I wouldn't trust it. The latency would get to the unusable levels below E, even if the tone was perfect.

  • Thanks for your reviews! I was thinking of getting the g2m to use with my clarinet + pickup -- I definitely was pleasantly surprised to find reviews by another "electric" woodwind player!

My one question is about the latency, which is noticeable in the video. Is it distracting & difficult to play, or did you get used to it fairly easily?

    Thanks again!

  • You get used to the latency. I did not find it distracting at all. Your own acoustic sound will be more dominant in your mind for timing issues, so that's what I tend to focus on.

The bigger issue with using it on a woodwind is that you have to play EXTREMELY clean. No chiff at the beginning of the note. I find myself needing to use quite a few non-standard fingerings and flick keys to keep the sound clean enough for the G2M. May not be a problem on clarinet.

  • The M9 and M13 are the Fx in the HD500. I have the harmonizer block setup to go (-3) for the B3 with two digital delays for appegiation and looper after but cannot alter my guitar tone knobs live because I instantly switch backand forth and its too many moves between beat 4 and 1 when dealing with latency. The HD500 allows me switch many FX blocks to address most moves needed for this to happen except the pre EQ (mixing) thing. Placing foot switches in logically order-Stops hot coals dance!

  • @tjowatonna - Latency becomes an issue when playing fast tempos. Its like learning to use a looper in a live band setting. Or laying down a central "strings" one-note tone on the looper and playing guitar on top while the band is playing.

  • @tjowatonna The "Mix" feature in the Line 6 FX Loop prevents me from doing this and increase the latency when playing live. Going through the Boss GE-7 then the G2M directly through the Line 6 HD500 midi Thru allows me to send Prg Changes to the JV Mini in. Paste this to you tube ---> KingGypsy/Matt Rainey "Born to Sing the Blues" ----- G2M (B3 & Sax ) to Line 6 HD500 Guitar solo. Let me know what you think.

  • Ok, thanks for the info. Hope Sonuus brings out a bass version which recognizes lower pitches.

  • Midi vocals? Well, you'd need to sing perfectly. Because if you detune a bit...
