More than 10,000 people are known to have died and many more are missing after an earthquake and deadly tsunami caused extensive damage along the coastline of north east Japan.
Entire villages were swept away as waves greater than 30ft wreaked havoc in the two prefectures of Iwate and Miyagi on 11 March. Over 310,000 people are currently displaced from their homes, including around 75,000 children. Families have lost everything and are sheltering in evacuation centres across the region.
We are on the ground, working across the whole of the affected areas, providing spaces for children to just be children as they come to terms with the dramatic changes to their lives. We have already established operations in the worst affected areas and will be working hard over the next three years to ensure that children and their families are supported on the road to recovery.
