This is a six part Biblical apologetic that I wrote on the topic of purgatory. The both authored and gave the lecture that you are listening to. The point is to demonstrate that purgatory is a concept that is found in the Bible. The presentation is about 50 minutes total. I hope to some day expand this treatment into a book.

  • i thought the church had abandoned the idea of purgatory.

by the way, you don't hear about hell either, by both from protestants and catholics.

i think you are a bit behind the times.

  • @haojiesheng For what it’s worth my ATF religious story is about the Jewish poobah named Hillel. Some guys asked him to recite the Torah while standing on one foot. They were hoping to have a laugh at his expense. Hillel stood on one foot and said: Don’t do onto others what you don’t want done to you. That’s the Torah, all the rest is commentary.

I think about that when folks argue how their religion right and others are wrong. Don’t forget that Jesus had no use for institutionalized religion.

  • @haojiesheng No offense taken. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Fascinating social phenomenon is religion. As a former Catholic I can't agree with your views of those of the Catholic church but I do find them interesting.

    Cheers.

  • @MightyCarnac My friend I am simply stating that I refuse to rely upon the testimony or opinions of others when proper argumentation is available to decide the point. I could care less about Coyne's opinions. If he desires to argue his point, then I will consider it. But the opinion of some Jesuit does not phase me. I have put many a Jesuits' personal positions to shame as well as scientists making certain claims. At this point you are beginning to waste my time, no offense. What of my question?

  • @haojiesheng Coyne doesn’t lack reason - he employs it selectively. At the observatory he’s a scientist. As a priest he bows to authority of his boss. Some folk can have it both ways.

    S. Hawking said it best: "Science is based on observation & reason. Religion is based on authority."

Intellect doesn’t drive beliefs like transubstantiation. Observation & reason rejects the fantasy. A chem lab can prove the Eucharist is toast. But church authority mandates the belief on threat of punishment.

  • @MightyCarnac My friend, my case is not made upon the opinion of some Jesuit priest, it is made upon my own accord. I am not responsible for the lack of another man's reason, but I am responsible for my own. Intellect led me to faith, my friend. I have yet to find a compelling atheist argument. Have you taken the closer examination of the three passages you cited prior? Remember that counter-intuitive is not contradictory.

  • @haojiesheng Search YT for the Dawkins-Coyne interview. George Coyne is a Jesuit who ran the Vatican Observatory. He says as an astronomer he does science same as if he was atheist. As a priest he's able to ignore/deny science. He's intelligent & educated . In his day job he'd throw out your "amazing truths" for lack of scientific evidence. As a priest he embraces "sacred tradition" -- another way of saying “we believe it therefore it's true". So how could such a thing happen to such a man?

  • @MightyCarnac My friend, it is true that people can "spin the bible" to support agenda. People can do that with any text. Look at the various interpretations of the 1st & 2nd Amendments in the Bill of Rights! I joined the Catholic Church at the age of 23 purely because of the amazing truths that the Faith reveals. No threats or fear for my salvation were involved. And I am a man of scientific burden & suspicion of organized religion. So how could such thing happen to a man such as me?

  • @MightyCarnac My friend, I will never forget reading a book the revealed all kinds of horrible things about the Bible. I was mortified. But as I continued I became suspicious. So I opened the Bible & read the the passages before the part quoted & after the part quoted and discovered that the Bible was not saying anything like the author was suggesting. It was purely out of context. I challenge you to read around & through the passages you cite to see what you find. Let me know.

  • @haojiesheng People can, and do, spin the bible to support any desired agenda. I wish you joy in your Catholicism but let's not forget that the Catholic church hands you a piece of bread (Eucharist) and tells you that it's living human flesh. In the same breath they’ll tell you that eating this flesh does not constitute cannibalism. Catholics buy this stuff because the belief is compulsory and enforced with threats. And yet the wafer can be scientifically shown to be just a wafer.
