While spying some new hard drives and a solid state ultra mobile PC at Samsung's gadgetfest in NYC earlier this week, I also spotted some cool flat panel stuff that Samsung has on the way. One of those was the FPT 5084: a 50-inch wireless plasma flat panel that's due in October. Expected retail price is $4500 for the 50-incher and $5500 for a 58-inch version.

As can be seen from the video, the package consists of the flat panel display and a hub that has a bunch of inputs on the back (including 3 HDMI inputs) so that it can route just about any audio and video (DVDs, Cable, etc.) to the wireless plasma display. This includes hi-definition content. The two plasma displays support 1080p HD. The first time we saw this sort of wireless transmission of HD was at CES earlier this year. A company called TZero showed us a prototype that relied on ultrawideband wireless technology. TZero doesn't make flat panels. Instead, it was looking for OEMs like Samsung to incorporate its wireless transmission system into their gear.

  • You're dead on. I also have a FP-T5084 and it doesn't have wireless, but I must say it has truly superb, if not one of the best, picture quality in comparison to the top HDTV's on the market. (Read CNET review)

  • 10 years from now this shit will be 4 bills lol

  • This TV in NOT the FTP-5084. I happen to own the 5084 and its NOT wireless. The TV in the video is actually, the FTP-5094w which is part of the "MAGNOLIA Home Theater" at Bestbuy. Both models can easily be compared at the Bestbuy web site and youll see my statement is correct.

    Shame on you ZDNet!

  • what model samsung is that

  • cool, snoop on next door neighbours dvd selection.

  • Wierd, I feel the exact opposite. I love Samsungs Designs. Panasonic and LG on ther other hand, not so much.

But ya, Design wise, Pioneere and Samsung look the most attractive IMO.

  • Cool feature, but the reality is as an overall package Samsung products are good from a performance side but *really suck* from the design side. Like why do all Samsung products, especially their HDTVs (LCD and Plasma) so freakn FUGLY? Don't fool yourself into thinking that all that matters is performance. Anyways, to Samsung (Koreans), nice wireless feature, but take some design lessons from Sony or Pioneer!

  • looks awesome
