"Baby, Please Don't Go" was first recorded by 'Big Joe Williams'. This is a Karaoke track purchased from Amazon.com. This is NOT the 60s recording you may be familiar with from another band.

The 60s recording of this track was recorded at regular speed and sped up a semitone, from the key of 'E' to 'F'. I slowed down the track I purchased by a semitone and am playing in the key of 'E'. When I posted this on Friday, I included a second performance mastered one semitone higher for the purists. Of course, I got a request for a lesson almost immediately. I am overdue for a lesson so I replaced the repeat performance with 'The elements of the song'. I show the left hand only. If you can't tell which string I'm picking by listening, this will be totally useless to you. I will politely say, if you can't, you should work on that.

The guitar was not capoed in the original 60s recording. The high open 'E' is essential to playing this song correctly. Let it ring and play it in unison with the fretted 'E' on the 'B' string as I am doing. The great Jimmy Page was doing studio work at the time this was recorded and layed down the guitar for the original 60s recording.

I had to record my guitar over the existing guitar on this track. It was mixed to the center, therefore, could not be EQd out. The studio guitarist for this recording is actually quite good but played a couple of additonal notes here and there that I do not agree with. I don't want to use the word 'wrong', let's say they are not in keeping with the original 60s recording.

    twangy has this down cold!

  • brilliant work ! ;- )

  • Great Job Sam!

  • Great tone, meticulous playing. That's fine if you want an exact cover, butt I wouldn't call somebody "wrong" for adding their own flair and putting some heart into a blues song. That's how blues exists.Of all the versions I've heard, I like Muddy Waters' version in G the best.

  • absolutely superb, a masterclass,well done.
