"Money was tight that year. The recession had hit everyone hard, but for some reason, tree prices were ridiculously high. Perhaps the merchants could still get sixty-five bucks for a nice balsam and ninety-five for a scotch pine...but not from us. I told Sara we had to listen for the one tree that called to us and said it wanted us to take it home. I didn't tell her that it also had to say, 'I cost less than twenty dollars.'
