To celebrate the release of Tubular Bells and Mike Oldfield: The Collection, there was an international event on Saturday 6th June, which saw eight countries around the Globe taking part on BELL DAY.

In the UK, the British Music Experience at the 02 hosted a spectacular event - The Handbell Ringers of Great Britain Vs The Orb. The 29-piece handbell ensemble played a version of Tubular Bells while The Orb DJ'ed a Orbular Bells set. People came from all over the country to watch and then join in on amassed handbells.

Elsewhere bells rang in Sydney, Australia (at the Opera House the iconic multi-venue performing arts centre), in Berlin, Germany (at the Berlin Victory Column / Siegessäule - the location were Mike Oldfield performed the legendary Millennium Bell concert on New Years Eve Y2K), in Belgium, Brussels (at the Atomium monument - built of spheres which are connected by tubes), in Japan, Yokohama (at the Hokutenin Temple, one of the traditional Japanese Temples), Buenos Aires, Argentina (at the Floralis Generica sculpture at Plaza de las Naciones the new monument and symbol of Buenos Aires), in Beijing, China & the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Mike Oldfield was in great praise of the day, and rang his own bell from his boat, moored off America.

The release of Tubular Bells - available in seven physical and digital formats out now - marks the first catalogue releases from the legendary artist since Mercury acquired his catalogue in 2007, and marks the start of a comprehensive reissue campaign.

  • indeed, nothing in Brussels, was there, looked everywhere, but no bells, only spanish music from the fair. really disappointing.

  • Nothing happened in Buenos Aires...

  • not a lot of audience for any of the bells - a washout!

  • Well, for those who aren't convinced it really happened, I was at the London gig with The Orb. I'm in the video at 0:55 ringing the big handbells. Did the gig, got the t-shirt to prove it!

  • I think the whole thing is a complete con. Even the 'official site' seems a bit fishy

  • I sent my brother and friends to the Berlin session, all they saw was rain and more rain, no bells just rain, Universal, dont promise things that dont exist!

  • One of my friends has waited for a long time in Paris where bells should have rung, but nothing.

He was very disappointed, and so I am, nothing in France this day, nothing but Barack Obama ! lol

  • I should have played a bell in São Paulo,Brazil...didn't know that Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires were also on the list.

Is there any footage of Mike himself playing a bell on his boat? Wanna watch it!
