  • Hear *Holly's* version.1st verse:The Kent State shoot'gs (Nat'l Guard May 1970).2nd? Victor Jara's murder by Chilean Junta. Activist Jara was arrested--&1000s of others--& forced to center of a stadium where his fingers were chopped off."Play your guitar NOW, if u can!" the Junta said./Victor held bloody stumps up & began singing--the ppl too, until "they shot his body" (& the others) "down." *Know* Holly is honored @ the greater application, but pls, kp our stories (& words) straight!

  • Yes, thanks for the information. We adjusted the song a little bit to tell personal stories.

  • Sorry, darlin' (Ran outta space). Didn't mean to come off sounding "b___-ey." Am a friend of H's and fellow musician-activist. Just felt a need to "give credit where it's due," no? Thanks for YOUR part in the Struggle for Peace & Justice!

  • No, it was wrong of me not to note that we changed the song a bit. We are very thankful of Holly's songs. Thanks!

  • @amihan59 It's folk music! You don't need Holly's permission! I am sure she would be happy to know her songs are still being used in real struggles, by many people around the world.

  • The best way to honor a folk song is to update its words to speak about new stories. This is what gives folk music life!

  • Holly Near changed the song for our group when she came to a gathering before a march in Michigan back in the 70s. It's tradition. You honor her in your use of the song.

  • Holly changed the song for us when she came to sing at a gathering in Michigan before a protest - it's her tradition and you have only honored her.

  • Peace and Thank You.

    Bless Your Heart!!!

  • hi, silverbonn. I am the father of the little girl singing Holly's song in the video. Is there a way we can contact Holly? We would like to ask permission to use some of her songs in our advocacy for human rights in the Philippines.

  • Beautiful song! Thank you.
