This video shows the pinion gear assembly back together and in the transmission half. This is just before the transmission was fully reassembled.

  • Is that a red legacy in the background?

  • @HijackerCGL I Wish

  • I'm in the market for a wrx and have heard a lot about 02wrx tranny problems. around what millage do problems usually start? is there an year of the wrx I should avoid, or are certain years of the wrx better do you know? thanks.

  • The problems that occur with the WRXs are not due to mileage so much as putting too much power to it or not shifting correctly. 2002-2003 models were the weakest. 2004 and later were built with stronger gears. BUT... if you are driving the WRX stock and treating the tranny well, it will last forever.

  • Hey, great videos man! I am about to take apart my 5 speed Subaru FWD transmission. Can you explain the gear press needed? Is it a large tool? I'm wondering if it's something I could rent/buy.

Wish me luck, probably need lots of parts 160k+ miles on the transmission and it whines when trying for 2nd/will not downshift at high rpm from 3rd to 2nd. Any tips are appreciated!

Again, great video, wish there were more people posting DIY videos like this.

  • Wish I could help you with the gear press info... I ended up taking the entire gear set to the dealer to have the gears pressed off/on. From what I understand, you need specialized attachments for each of the gears to ensure proper fit.

Good luck with the rebuild. If I had any tip to give you I would leave you with this... make sure you have the factory service manual for reference!

  • thanks! ya i thought it weird that the cheapest parts are at the dealer... but its true

  • Got the parts from my local dealer. Since I did not have a press to get the gears off, I ended up taking the gear assembly to the dealer's service dept. Parts cost me about $350, and the labor was another $200 to taken the assembly apart and press back in. In the end, I got a new second gear, new 1-2 slider hub, and new 1/2 synchros.

Good luck! It was certainly a fun experience for me.

  • i have a second gear issue with mine and am thinking of rebuilding my self where did you get the parts and how much was it?

  • been there done that when I installed the mfactory gears on my car
