Washing a Child in a Spica Cast

Zak had bi-lateral hip surgery and has to wear a chest-to-ankles cast called a spica cast for six weeks. Kids can already get stinky, so when a kid is in a full body cast, they can really get stinky! And with the cast, you have to be very careful not to get it wet. Here's how we clean Zak while he's in his spica, along with some tips for care too.

Bjørn has also just had the same op - unfortunately he's too long for the counter top! Man that cast gets smelly, it's the 2nd time he's had this op and he's always such a trooper!

Aren't our kids so strong and special!

@lingus74 The cast can get smelly! We were lucky to be able to clean Zak a lot with the duct tape wrap we put around him and it wasn't too hot outside so he didn't get too overly stinky. Thanks for watching!

I had that done when I was five but the doctor put me in two straight leg casts from toe to just below my hips with a piece of a hockey stick between the bottom part of my legs. From the hips down I looked like a big capital letter A. But from the moment I woke up from surgery to the day I got the cast off I couldn't lie down in the thing because my tone was so high it kept pulling me back up to sitting position. Mom and I had lots of fun trying to get a little bit of sleep that week.
