Media7: Series 5, Episode 13 (Part 1)

The extraordinary Australian General Election and the state of New Zealand's weekend newspapers are both topics for discussion on this week's Media7.

The Aussie election proved a disaster for the major political parties but a bonanza for media advertising, as the contenders threw huge amounts of money about in a bid to win hearts, minds and votes.

Some estimates put the total media spend by the parties at more than $70-million and lobby groups like the mining industry spent tens of millions more.

Australian media buyer Harold Mitchell joins Russell Brown by satellite from Melbourne to discuss the bonanza which soon may be repeated as the prospect of another yet another election to break the deadlock is a distinct possibility.

Also offering some pertinent observations on events across the Tasman is former Labour Party Secretary, Mike Williams, who travelled to Australia to observe and comment on the contest for TVNZ News.

The other topic Russell Brown will be tackling is the New Zealand weekend newspaper battle. It's a close fight between Fairfax and APN -- and both media groups are offering new look pages and content.

Media analyst and veteran journalist Denis Welch has been looking closely at the rival products and he'll be giving us a critical appraisal of the look, the editorial content and the journalistic philosophy driving this important segment of the newspaper market.

Media7 will conclude with a tribute to the work of photographer Herman Leonard who died recently aged 87.

Leonard's moody images of the pantheon of jazz greats of the 20th Century have been described as "making jazz the epitome of cool".
