We present a virtual musical instrument system that can be used to emulate playing music in the real world. An optical multi-touch table developed in-house by RENCI is used as the input device for the system. The multi-touch interface allows users the ease of performing digital music in an intuitive fashion. We show a virtual xylophone and a virtual drum as example instruments simulated with our system. Physics-based sound synthesis methods are used to automatically generate the musical sounds dependent on strike positions, instrument materials, and impact magnitude. This simulation provides a rich audio response corresponding to users' input in real-time [Zhimin Ren, Maggie Zhou, and Ming C. Lin].
