Falkenau - The Impossible (Samuel Fuller bears witness)

In may 1945, the first infantery division of the U.S. Army, the famous BIG RED ONE, fought his last battle in Europe, in the Sudetanland (Czechoslovakia), liberating the concentration camp at Falkenau.

Among the soldiers was Samuel Fuller, who films this episode (in 16 mm B.W. silent). This unique document is shown for the first time as part of "Falkenau - The impossible".

After a brief introduction describing the liberation of the camp, and the way it was filmed, Samuel Fuller adds a running commentary to images he recorded more than forty years ago. "It is the only film in which we see civilians in a camp doing such things.

It is the first and the last time that this happened during the war." In the final sequence of the film, we hear a great cinema director considering problems which have preoccuped him throughout his career : to what extent can an image be honest ; how is it possible to RE-PRESENT the universe of the concentration camp; and how does one engaged in the necessary transmission of this reality to the younger generation.

Mai 1945, la célèbre Big red one - première division d'infanterie de l'armée américaine - livre son dernier combat en Europe dans les Sudètes en Tchécoslovaquie et libère le camp de concentration de Falkenau.

Samuel Fuller, alors sous les drapeaux, filme cet épisode. C'est un document unique (16mm, noir et blanc, muet), resté jusqu'à ce jour inédit, qui est repris dans Falkenau, vision de l'impossible.

Après une courte introduction présentant les conditions du tournage et l'épisode de la libération de ce camp ordinaire, Samuel Fuller commente les images qu'il a enregistrées quarante ans plus tôt.

C'est le seul film où l'on voit des civils dans un camp faisant ce qu'ils font. C'est la première fois et la dernière fois que cela se produit pendant la guerre.

Ce grand cinéaste aujourd'hui disparu s'interroge également sur l'honnêteté des images, sur la possibilité de représenter l'univers concentrationnaire et sur la nécessité d'en transmettre la mémoire aux jeunes générations.
