"Demonstrators protesting the visit of U.S. President George W. Bush clashed with police and a pro- Bush group in Sydney, a day before a rally is expected to attract 7,000 people.

Around 4000 people massed around a hotel where at least three Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum delegations are staying, prompting around 200 police to cordon off the entire street. Security personnel scrambled to check cars for explosives as police helicopter circled overhead.

At least one anti-Bush protester tried to break through a security cordon at Sydney's Hyde Park, and the police arrested him.

Around 100 also dropped their trousers in a "21-bum salute'' to APEC leaders in Sydney.

The protesters have a range of causes from the war in Iraq to human and labor rights.
