My rant/rave about the Kindle and my initial concerns which turns into many tangents about how much I dislike some advances in technology.

  • Oh man, you're reaction at the beginning reminds me of me! I didn't get a cell phone till 2005! I'm still really on the fence about eReaders, but my husband has one and he really likes it. I should borrow his at some point to test it out. My husband really wanted a smartphone and there was a B1G1 free deal, so I got one and I was hesitant at first because I thought I wouldn't use it, but now I don't think I could go back. It's great on the subway! Also, book suggestion: Ex Libris by Anne Fadiman

  • @skafunkmelt See i am worried I will like it and then use it all the time. I already struggle with staying off the internet all day. My husband has a droid so I figure most of the time if we really need on the spot info we can use his. I just don't want to pay double for my bill either. So far I haven't read on the kindle so my husband is disappointed. I think it will just take time for me to transition. I would test it out first though before splurging.

  • A year ago I swore I would never use an e reader. 3 months ago I got a Nook and I love it. I still go back and forth between the Nook and actual books but it's so convenient for when I'm on the go.

  • @1DawnMarie1 I am hoping I will just use both and the kindle will be convenient for on the go. We shall see.

  • well I can see your point about not wanting technology, so I wouldn't want to try to talk you into keeping it. But the reason I have chosen to keep mine. 1. it reads to me, took a while to get used to the computer voice but I love working out or doing chores and having it read. 2. Amazon is constantly having ebook sales where popular books sell for very cheap or free 3. I do borrow books from the library on it and gotta love not having those late fees

  • @TheCubicleBlindness I need to check out the out loud reading feature. I used to love getting books on tape/cd for long drives but haven't in a long time. That would be really nice, especially if it is a book you can't put down. I am still undecided.

  • I have a literati and completely agree with you on everything you said.

  • Gosh we are so much alike. I bought the kindle but I still get books from the library as well. So the most recent books i check out from the library. I have down loaded a lot of free books from amazon. Or I get the ones under 3.99 or even .99. So there are still a lot of books you can get for next to nothing. I really enjoy it. I think you will too. I dont use the internet on it either. I just download the books from my computer on the website. And then turn my kindle on and it loads up.

  • You can buy kindle books on the Amazon website on your computer, and the ebooks will instantly go to your kindle.

I have a kindle, and while I like having physical books, if the book is huge or ugly or bad font or bad margins, I'm more than happy to get it on my kindle. :D I have the huge Kindle DX which is an enormous beast compared to the other ones. I didn't know it was so big until I opened it. I wish it was smaller, but I've gotten used to it. At least it fits more words on a page.

  • Well records eventually came back, so if books do go out of style, maybe they'll come back. And it's only physical copies that would go out. I don't see ebooks leaving the seen anytime soon.

The kindle you got is one of the newer ones I think. And what's really nice is that on the kindle, some books like classics are free, and you can get free samples of books so you can try them out before buying them.

  • Just noticed my comment got cut off. I had said that working at a bookstore was by far the best job I've ever had. I had to leave it to earn a living wage, though. My sister is currently getting her masters in library science. Her dream is to be a librarian :).

  • @ikielove Well that lets me know what order to read them in. :)

  • @Scamander Doh. My husband mentioned that too I think but I forgot. Sometimes you can see a faint image when it is off...like an etch a sketch.
