As a kid I used to sail off Chatham in one of those little Sailfish boats - which used to tip over pretty easy (and once the mast snapped in half). I scare myself when I think of the things I used to do. The shadow under this shark shows how shallow the water is, and how close the shore is.

I think it's just a good quality camera with good autofocus. Does lead to a weird, unnatural effect, though, you're right.

at about 1;30 in this video...it appears that this shark is simply hanging in the water,,,i'm pretty sure great whites cannot simply give hang time. Maybe it's just the filming...

I live in chatham and I find this really cool. Huge predators hovering right off the beach. They're not new to chatham and the're not gonna leave while there are still seals here. Totally natural and awesome.
