Quite interresting piece of US history. Seems somehow America doesn't feel comfortabel without a common enemy, and if there isn't one, they simply create one.

my last name is McCarty. Even though there is no H in there I always cringe when people say it wrong. As an american this is one of the MANY times in our history that I am just ashamed of. All countries have their moments when they do things that are heartless and cruel but as an aspiring entertainer to just imagine being in her father's position frightens me. Even though this isnt an issue now, I still always dream of moving to England because I feel there creative expression is more accepted.

The amazing legacy left by Mr. Wannamaker, vs the disgraceful blot on history left by McCarthy needs no further explanation.
Ms. Wannamaker is a brilliant actress, and as we can see, she comes by her gifts honestly. A great talent, and seems to be a lovely person as well..

Oops, I meant 62, I pressed the wrong number on my iPod. Thank you!

@cywyhot I should have added times of deep economic distress and social/political upheaval. Sorry. :) Basically, any era where people feel the secure ground under their feet is shifting and they are terrified of the consequences is when extremism becomes popular. Today might be included in that sort of era in many parts of the world.

@Bahutsauvage In most cultures, in times of deep economic distress people become desperate and turn to a dictatorial authority figure to save them. In one time it was sacrificing virgins. In another it was chucking people into slave labor camps. For us in that particular era it was calling everyone a Communist. The lesson to be learned is it can happen anywhere to any nation. No one is immune. All are susceptible. Even you. Even me.

@richiebabe24 It used to be you could go to Mexico and Canada without a passport which is a tremendous amount of territory to explore and many cultures to appreciate. It's just the past couple years when a passport finally came into play with Canada. Travel abroad costs more. I hope that isn't a Brit accusing our heterogeneous culture of xenophobia! lol We are afraid of losing what we have. Not the same thing at all. Every group that comes here feels that way--you aren't taking mine from me.
