This crappy thing was a loaner that was given to my grandad after he took in his '04 Park Ave for brake service..
What a horrible little thing.

  • for a beater it doesnt look that bad. I've seen a lot worse.

  • @Jon3800

I call it a beater, because that's what it is compared to all our other cars that don't have any rust or wear at all.

  • @CarPro1993

I see what you mean gathering its a 96 with 163,000+ miles car on one of GM's problematic engines. I had a 3100 lumina, it was a money pit, 2 altenators, 2 fuel pumps in the 3 years I had it, only put 10,000km on it before I sold it.

Not sure where you live in the states, but it's hard to keep cars rust-free. In Canada we salt the streets for winter. I drive a 98 Oldsmobile LSS (87,000 miles) with the L67 motor (stored for the winter), and the typical rust spots on the door.

I live in Pennsylvania, about 40 miles south of Lake Erie, and we get some really harsh winters and they constantly salt the roads here. It's extremely hard to prevent rust unless you get your car undercoated or oiled before winter. I never liked GM's 3100 engines, I know that the 3800's are really good, long-lasting engines though. You have any experience with GM's new 3.6?

  • @CarPro1993

To tell you honestly, I don't have much experience with the motor other test driving a 2005 Buick Allure (LaCrosse) with this engine for about an hour or so, seems very powerful with 250hp. Now keep in mind it is a DOHC design, so it expensive when it comes to repairs.

I've heard the Northstar 4.6L was head gasket prone as the the 3100 and 3400. The Vortec 4300 and the 3800 were one of GM's best V6 engines

  • @Jon3800

My grandfather got an Allure (LaCrosse in the States), I'm hoping we don't have any engine problems then. I love the engine, loads of power for a Buick, you just barely push on the pedal and it takes off.

Several years back we had three Cadillac DeVilles, all with the 4.6 Northstar and we never has issues at all. I know the 4300 Vortec went into Blazers and S-10s and the 3800 Series engines went into their midsized cars, and I know them to be good engines.

the 3.6L was designed by Cadillac, I agree its a sweet motor. If I had the money, I'd buy a 07 Aura XR

  • I've got a 96 regal coupe except it's got a 3800 series 2, which is 10x better than the 3.1. mines got 165K miles but it's a sweet car. it's got rust in the same spots though :(
