for the record.

@atgcuz True. I suspect this guy already knows how to squat though :-D Also, strongman doesn't really feature that many full squat movements.....maybe that's why he's focussing on this portion of the movement?
-
@Pisswizzard1234 ok, it strengthens you, but it doesnt help you learn technique. also the best exercise for any movement is really the movement itself. specificity was one of the key components of how the ledgendary bulgarian weightlifters trained. if a lifter was learning to a olympic/powerlifting squat properly, he should choose to just do that squat instead of doing this
-
@atgcuz The squat (whether power or Olympic stylee) requires hamstring power - power more than Oly. The box squat, by forcing/allowing you to sit back more without toppling, puts all the strain on the posterior chain and forces you to strengthen it. So when you sit back into whatever style of squat you do, your posterior chain will be stronger. And as the first momvement of any squat is to sit back, how this doen't help isn't quite clear to me.

@dingusbird123 depends on what you define as "correctly". for a full squat, leaning back the same way you sit on the box is wrong. i can't imagine how box squats can help an athlete learn to do a full squat. maybe a powerlifting squat i dunno
wow, there are a lot of internet experts here. these are the facts:
1) squatting 340kg is really fucking hard.
2) squatting 340kg for less-than-full ROM off of a box (so you don't benefit from a stretch reflex) is really fucking hard.
3) box squats and partial ROM movements are legitimate additions to an advanced training routine.
this guy probably does plenty of full squats to help his strongman work, too. the rest of you would do well to shut the fuck up, get under the bar and squat more.

The criticism here is unwarranted. Brant isn't pretending he's doing competition-style squats -- he's doing a heavy squat exercise that will HELP his squat (and his deadlift even more) and will help build strength and endurance for Strongman competitions. Believe me, Paul Anderson did these, too.
