John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
07/07/08
TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "What is the most fundamental difference between you and Sen Obama?"
JOHN MCCAIN: "I think it really has to do with the role of government, as well as our nation's security. If you look at Sen Obama's record, [...] except for the 130 times he voted present, which is remarkable, [...] it's very partisan, Democrat, liberal voting record. And that's what people care about more than anything else.
MCCAIN: "[...] On national security policy, we obviously have dramatically different views. I believe that the surge was called for. I believed at the time that we were losing. And I argued for the surge. He said the surge wouldn't succeed and was doomed to failure.
MCCAIN: "[...] Everything he has supported is bigger government, more regulation, higher taxes, etc. And I am a very proud conservative and believe in [...] a government that basically only intervenes in people's lives when every other avenue has been exhausted. I believe that's the principles of our Founding Fathers; that individuals, and then states, and then finally the federal government is the one that makes decisions that affect Americans' lives. I believe in the individual first."
