This is Kubuntu Jaunty Alpha 4 with the default KDE 4.2 and default window manager KWin - mini preview. Still in development, but stable for daily desktop use, beats windows 7 with effects, advanced window management, multiple desktops feature and great file manager (best I've ever used) Dolphin. Also, there are lots of preinstalled apps and a complete office suite (open office 3.0). I'm demonstrating just a small part of Dolphins features, window management, desktop switching and the cool Kickoff menu (you can switch to something more Gnomeish - the classic menu) or use Lancelot menu (cool, but not demonstrated in this video).
There are lots of effects (fall apart, explode windows, snow and many more, but not demonstrated :( ) Search for KDE4.2 effects.

Sorry about lousy video Q, recorded with my crappy Samsung phone (desktop recorder was too buggy with this Alpha).

  • you are part of the developing team?

It looks awesome btw, split view for example and, of course, the effects :)

  • No, I am not a developer, but I support these guys at KDE4 project (by promoting reporting feedback and testing).

  • does it install with all those effects? like did you set it up to look like this or does it start fresh installed like this?

  • Yes, it installs with all these effects, but for example, you have to turn on "wobbly windows" in setting manager because they are turned off by default, also I have set up those big icons on desktop (but only the looks and links). There are lots of options to set up everything as you like, but everything is preinstalled.

  • Can i run Gnome or deb in Kubuntu by itself?

  • Don't really understand the Q, yes you can run gnome (desktop environment) in Kubuntu, but you have to download it additionally, so instead you can use Ubuntu (witch has gnome preinstalled). Kubuntu = KDE, Ubuntu = Gnome DE. And both systems are built on the same base - Debian, so they use *.deb packages.

  • No the environment does.

  • Who cares about electric? Seriously, it's actually using the exact same resources ubuntu needs by default.

  • I try Kubuntu 8.4 but i was confuse because i use Ubuntu so yea but i heard 4.2 is much better. im going to try it again.

Is there any benefit over Ubuntu?

if it just looks good and demands more resources that means is wasting more electricity right?
