I wasnt supposed to survive.
They had to cut me out of the car and I was unconscious for two months before I even twitched. I was supposed to be dead just like my brother and mother was, but I wasnt. Somehow, for some reason, God decided that I was the one that was supposed to live. The drunk driver didnt make it, my mother lasted two weeks in the hospital but never pulled through, and my brother was gone on impact. But me, the one that had been sitting on the side the other car slammed into and the one that should be dead somehow survived.
Dad moved us out of our small town and into a rich, even smaller neighborhood. He couldnt stand our too small home anymore where there was nothing but memories.
That and I couldnt navigate through it with a wheelchair.
I survived, but really, only half of me did. I had back injuries that left me paralyzed from the waist down. Another miracle, doctors said. I shouldnt be moving at all. But my upper half worked just fine. Still, I was doomed to the humiliation of a wheelchair for the rest of my life, which was why I had grown very accustomed to the downstairs of my home and my very large bedroom. I found a love for reading and music, specifically the piano (my dad had a special machine installed so I can even hold down a pedal without the use of my foot), and of course, online shopping.
Dad works all the time. And because he is gone so much, he has a nurse hired for me. Shes like my grandmother to me, though I cant tell her for fear of calling her old in the process. She goes by the name of Missy Collins and is always checking on me, even though she knows Im perfectly capable of doing things on my own. It has been over a year, after all.
As I said, I dont often leave the house. My wheelchair is an embarrassment, though I know I should be thankful. But I guess its guilt, too, that locks me inside. I hate knowing that I am all thats left while my poor brother and mother are buried. So I punish myself. I really shouldnt have survived. But somehow, I did, and now I was going to punish myself by never leaving the house. I had everything I need here at home.
But home got boring. Especially in the summer.
It was one of those hot, slow summer days. I was sitting on a lounge chair by my pool, listening to the everyday life of my street, which included six houses. All were the same, very large red brick homes with nice cars and shiny gates. I didnt know anyones names so I did what I have done since I was a toddler when names were horrible for me to remember; I made up names.
I glanced at the house on my other side. Out of all my neighbors, this family is definitely the strangest. They are friendly enough, which is how I know their name, but they keep mostly to themselves, say funny things like hatty and they dont own a car. Yes, the Kleppes were odd. But they did say hello. Unfortunately, all I know is their last name.
That brings me back to my own pool. Here I was, sitting there and minding my own business with a book on the table beside me with a tall glass of lemonade. Missy had allowed me to sit out there because she knew it made me feel normal. I didnt have to sit in my chair and I asked her to push it out of sight so I could concentrate on tanning and pretend that the accident never happened. It was one of my favorite things to do. I could act as if I could walk and run.
I reached over to the table and grabbed my book. I was fascinated with this one and was just beginning to read about Esmeraldas passionate despair while Damian risks his life to protect her when I heard a noise.
Pausing in my reading, I looked up and around. There was no one in my yard but there were definitely voices. I sat up a little straighter and spun around.
"Look at that, you idiot, she heard us!" one voice said.
"You're the one that said this angle was better. What are we doing spying on innocent girls, anyways? What happened to Macy?" the other voice snapped.
"Macy is the fairest of all fair women," the first voice replied, "And were not spying, were exploring. Besides, I didnt know I had a neighbor my age."
I found the source of the voices. It was coming from the fence where there were some very high bushes. There was a gate, never used, right beside it, but I hadnt heard it open. I wasnt even sure if it could open, really. Its never been used and I never really expected it to be. But apparently, teenage boys just couldnt resist an innocent teenage girl minding her own business. I could see parts of them behind the branches and leaves.
Ah, shit. There were two boys spying on me.
How do you manage to keep writing all of your series?! You have so many! Hahaha! ;)
you could always split the episode into two parts and continue it onto a different video if you need it.
