Just about anything he write is fantastic. There is a great book called The Great Shark Hunt. It is a sort of compilation of articles that he has written.

Hell's Angels, The Rum Diary, Curse of Lono. Pretty much just go to the section of Barnes and Noble or whatever bookstore and pick one.

The Great Shark Hunt - A must read because it has early articles & the 'Derby' article, the first Gonzo piece! Which is essential reading for fans, also many, many, more great stories. Hunter's South American articles are included & on top of being very good they are interesting & provide key insight into how the mind of young HST worked. Really if you haven't read it - it's the Book to get, really essential reading for any fan. I find I still pick mine up sometimes & read a story or two :D

I think you are right...he seems constantly on edge...is it nerves or possibly that feeling of uncomfortable awkwardness?? also the chain smoking...all the chain smokers i know all seem to have that deep thinker/nervous personality..weird. amaaaazing man.

I think it may be the strain of keeping up a persona. Read his letters, they bear no relation to his public image at all.
He wasn't a Hemingway fan for nothing.
