Sher Mohammad was born and raised in Afghanistan and trained there as a pharmacist. Following the Soviet occupation of his country in the 1980s, he fled to Pakistan. His home village was bombed, he says, and his mother and nephew killed. In Pakistan, he continued to work as a pharmacist before starting a gemstone trading business in the mid-1990s in Peshawar. He has two sons and seven daughters and many grandchildren.
