I recently learned, and not long before recording it, Kite. I thought I'd go ahead and do a cover of it and see exactly how well it would turn out. Actually not quite as bad as I thought it would, although I think I need to work a little on tone. ;)

It didn't take long for me to find a sound I was happy with. I used a Spring Reverb into a Red Comp into a Screamer and into the AC4. The Red Comp, in case you don't know, is based on the Dyna Comp by MXR. The Edge has one in his rig but I'm not too sure if he uses it for Kite. It seemed to work great for me.

This is the first time i've really attempted to cover a song with a slide, just to let you know. So my slide playing isn't really that amazing. There isn't much to it actually, it's more about having the right sound.

  • Great cover! just wanna ask you a question and maybe the stupidest i can ask you..... what slider are you using?

  • @TheSuperman151 Thanks! And not a dumb question at all. I'm using a Dunlop chrome slide. I'm not sure exactly what size slide, I think it was a Medium.

  • Great! So no delay? Just reverb at the beginning of the chain?

  • @muggle911 Yep, just reverb and a Screamer. I think Edge does use delay. I didn't think about delay until AFTER I did Kite. I took a listen to the studio version and it sounds like there is delay there, leaving a trail of notes after he slides down the fretboard. Although I don't think you absolutely have to use delay, as shown here.

  • Nice. How do you know that the M13 Red Comp is based on the Dyna Comp? I believe you - just wondering how you know.

  • @redtigerboy4 Line 6 ships their M13's with a little booklet telling you what each effect is modeled after. It's also on their website under the M13 product. I would post a link but youtube won't let me. Basically you just go to the Line6 website and choose the M13 and somewhere on a tab it should tell you about all the effects modeled.
