The city of San Francisco and the bicycle coalition wants drivers and bike riders to get along and co-exist. That hasn't always been easy and some driving habits have prompted bikers to take to the sidewalks. In this edition of people behaving badly Stanley Roberts gets a first hand look at how police are planning a bike crackdown. BTW: Only bike riders under 17 are allowed to ride on the sidewalk.

  • better road planing WHICH considers cyclists would help too, would it not? Why not more and wider bicycle lanes? why not also crack down on drivers who abuse cyclist by assaulting with their cars on a daily basis?

  • Actually you are 2 times as likely to get a concussion from riding on the sidewalk than riding on the street.

Really, if you aren't stupid, riding on the street is generally safe. I've been riding for a long time, and have yet to have been hit by a car.

Most people who are scared of getting hit by a car on the road, haven't been cycling on the road.

Sidewalks are designed for pedestrians, and you can easily hit them. They could report you and you gotta pay a fine.

  • I biked in the street and in a sidewalk depending on judgement. If the sidewalk is free just bike slowly even walk with the bike if you have too you don't go as fast but atleast safer than a single mistake on road that would end under the wheel of a vehicle. If your a old timer or not physically fit to bike toe to toe on the road why not. I believe sidewalk and road biking should be a choice for the cyclist. I have many close call biking on the road, I hate educating every single bad drivers.

  • Cyclists should have to get liability insurance. I've almsot had some hit me

  • Wish that San Diego would enforce the law

  • It seems that the city of San Francisco is hungry for money and are coming up with ideals to generate more revenue in any means they can on the people that live or visit there beware and watchful of your surroundings there most likely is someone watching YOU so they can give you a ticket.

True that. I've been in seven accidents up to date, one of which was my bad (I was riding on the sidewalk) partially. The reason why I say partially is because the pedestrian was stealing a shopping cart, swerving left and right on the sidewalk to make sure no one passed her, talking on the phone, all while looking at the stores that passed her.

Vehicles do hit cyclists, though. I am actually considering proposing a liscence re-cert where it's required to look before turning.

  • 0:54 The guy is absolutely right. I think you should be able to ride on the sidewalks if you do it cautiously enough. If you come into come into contact with somebody then you'd be at fault but its way too dangerous. I recommend maps.google.com, the suggest bike routes. You can also share your input and suggest better areas to ride than others and google can change their bike maps.

  • I'm a full time bicycle commuter. I know the laws and follow them.. I watch motorist run stop signs, passing me as I stop... I've questioned many motorist about the laws... Not one motorist knows where to stop at a stop sign... So, in my world motorist are stupid people... Before you reply, come to Minneapolis and ride with me.... I've also riden in 5 states and I know the laws in all of them....I've also driven in 20 states.. also know the laws too. They are on state web pages...

  • why is there so much hatred for cyclists? As a car driver sometimes I think it would really be nice to be able to ride my bike to do errands or go to work instead of sitting in boring traffic, but it's just too scary because not only are there bad drivers out there, but there are people who really hate cyclists and drive aggressively toward them. It's such a shame, and a loss for drivers who could be enjoying the city streets instead of plowing through it.

  • Bike riders are dorks

  • Cyclists these days are idiots. I've seen more and more run red lights and endanger themselves. Problem is when they get hurt in those circumstances, they wail and cry that a big bad car hit them. You want to be on the road - you obey the traffic laws. It's pretty simple. I know it's hard to get that into your bong residued brains, but one can hope.
