GULF BREEZE - The number of handgun sales in Florida is way up, and as a result, so are the number of applications for concealed weapons permits.

The state department of agriculture received 91 thousand permit applications in 2008, but in just the first six months of 2009, there were 96 thousand applications submitted.

That increase in demand has severely increased wait times, which the state is now trying to alleviate.

When Mark Brand applied for a concealed weapons permit 10 years ago, he waited a reasonable amount of time to get it.

"My initial permit came in right at the 60-day point."

This year, 60 days is a dream for most applicants.

"I think I've heard upwards of 4 to 6 months."

Miles Schuler hears a lot from gun owners at his shop in Gulf Breeze, and he's also seen a lot more this year.

"There is an increase, and it's geared toward the concealable handgun more than just handguns in general."

Brand thinks gun sales are up because a segment of the population is scared their second amendment rights are in jeopardy.

"The current administration and there's opportunity, maybe for more gun control legislation to be passed, and I don't think that's a good thing. But there's also...any time you have a tighter economy, you tend to have people slightly more worried about their well-being, and protecting themselves."

Either way, it's made for long waits for permits.

But now, the department of agriculture says you can shorten that wait considerably if you apply right at one of their regional offices.

"I'm talking to people now, maybe daily, that are getting them back in a week to two weeks."

Schuler hopes so, because even though sales are up, there's a lot of merchandise he can't get his hands on to sell because supplies are scarce.

"Lately, it's just no guessing exactly, depending on the model or the brand."

If you're looking to apply for a concealed weapons permit and don't want to wait, the department of agriculture office for this region is located in Fort Walton Beach.
