I'm sure I could Google it, but since you have familiarity with bears, & identify misconceptions, it would be interesting if you shared more about common assumptions vs what your experience has been, perhaps including with different type of bears.
I'm in Australia, we don't have bears here. I've never seen one. Mainly I hear of them through bear attacks in the wilderness & tend to feel badly for bears then shot, esp as isolated habitat is diminishing/at risk in many cases.

Hmm, very interesting, thanks for responding. Well, I did not make any assumptions according to the colour of the bear as such, as to be honest, I don't know enough about the distinguishing characteristics of different types of bear. I was basing it on a general idea of bears, bear mums with cubs, and wild animals with young in general - that they are wild animals, and can attack humans if seeing them as a threat. I've also seen Grizzly Man ;) so, you know.

I believe it's more to get the cubs out of harms way in case Mom needs to fight the other bear. If the babies were on the ground, they could easily be smacked, pushed, kicked, or squashed while Mom's defending them. It's not as if that Mama Bear is just going let another bear climb that tree to get her cubs.

damn i saw 6 bears in 10 mins over shenandoah national park and 4 were a mother bear a 3 cubs 5 cubs and 2 bears? damn musta gotten their groove on

where was this?

What a smart mama bear. Notice that she's at 1st in passive defensive mode and moves a little bit away from the cubs, in case there's a need to fight. 5 cubs must be a paw-full to look after.
@BearsForever, could you tell us how you filmed this without having to worry about the bears attacking you? Were you in some kind of hide?

@VoidDeluxe I was not in a hide. I was standing on the ground probably within 50 feet with nothing between me and that mother with cubs. A very common misconception is that mother bears with cubs will attack a person in defense of the cubs, this is in fact a brown bear trait and not applicable to black bears. In the 4 years I've worked with wild bears and even walked with them, I've never been "attacked" and never once was in fear I would be..
