  • An amazing piece of music.

I saw Brian perform this in Glasgow, 2004, and I remember thinking when the horns came in, "this man is simply on a different level from everyone else."

    Stunningly powerful piece.

  • DavidCKendall,

This IS the first version... just re-recorded 40 years later. The Smiley Smile version of "Wind Chimes" was done after most of the recording for SMiLE's original version were finished, just not completed, along with the rest of the material.

    I like both.

  • Undoubtedly this is Brian's best vocal performance on the 2004 Smile release.

  • @manatthewindow im 25 just discovering The Beach boys now. When i say that i mean ive listened to them growing up but usually only greatest hits tapes which don't even half do their musical scope justice. :) wish i got to see Brian :(

  • interesting that some see this as a dark, disturbing song. I never thought of that, and see it as more jubilant. like joy in the commonplace. but i can respect your view also. art holds the multitudes within it. i guess.

  • when the horns came in i said "woooooooo!" only brian wilson's music can get me 2 do that :)

  • "The Pet Sounds Sessions" box set won a Grammy didn't it? Well let's hope "THE SMiLE SESSIONS" box set wins a Grammy in 2012!!!! Can't believe we're getting the REAL DEAL on Nov. 1st!!!!

  • @Hocunto - Definitely. This song is really disturbing...especially the version on Smiley Smile. It may or may not have been Brian's intent to make it like that, but the irrational fixation on and fear of an inanimate object like wind chimes makes sense to me, and it comes across in the music. It's not something everyone can relate to, probably, but there have been times that looking at an ordinary object has filled me with total dread and sadness for no reason...this song reminds me of that.

  • I love this particularly because it's a dark song masquerading as a pretty ditty.

  • How in the hell did this album not win every grammy category it could possibly fall into? Nothing sounds like this, today or yesterday.

  • I like the Smiley Smile version better! It's so much more mellow, psychedelic. The harmonies are better, they're quite hilarious later on in the song.

  • Great road trip album! thanks for posting.
