How does the output of xvidcap work? It's in the form of regular character data that makes sense to pipe around through fifos like that? I wouldn't imagine a compressed file format would work since it needs all the data at once in order to be encoded.

openSUSE 10.2, but beryl was compiled from source, as far as i can remember.
