I had a good friend who moved to England and committed suicide. He had bipolar disorder. I always thought that he would be around forever. he always had a good attitude to older gay guys. When I was young I didn't mind that older gay guys found me attractive - I was flattered. They find you attractive - They don't club you and drag you back to a cave.
As a personal friend of activist Morris Kight, I remember him commenting on how challenging it was to manage age as a gay man. Now that I am older I understand how he felt. I think he fought for our rights and he also fought for relevance. Actually there is very little discussion or support concerning this issue. I would really appreciate it if you guys would spread the word that more forums, videos and encouragement is needed. I and others like me need your support. Thank you.
I am a 51 year old gay man. Actually, I was personally involved in the civil rights movement during the 70's, 80's and 90's as the former advertising sales director of The Advocate, Frontiers and Out Front Colorado gay publications. I was part of the inner circle of our struggle and lost so many of my generation during the AIDS crisis of the 80's and 90's. Your video touched me because I have lived my entire life in the GLBT community and no longer feel I have a home there due to aging.
In my late teens my gay friends all vowed to die before their mid forties. As it turned out most of them did - mostly from AIDS. I'm the only one that lived to become old and I understand why they feared it so much. I have an okay life now but I had to leave the gay "community" to achieve it.
