This is me doing a drum mic test. I am a drummer and I just wanted to see if I could make a video with really good drum quality. Let me know what you think. Here's what I used:

Peace drum set
14 inch snare
12 inch mounted tom
16 inch floor tom
22 inch bass drum

14 inch Paiste 502 hats
16 inch Paiste 502 crash
20 inch Paiste 502 ride
15 inch Zildjian A Custom crash

Cobalt CO9 mic (bass drum)
Shure SM58 (snare drum)
Marshall condenser mic (overhead)
Yamaha MW10 mixer
Mixcraft recording software

iMovie HD

Again, let me know what you think. Thanks!

  • How did you get your snare to sound so poppy and nice?

  • @evenstevens280 Tune it tight, throw a moongel on it, and a bit of compression and EQ. Part of the reason it is so poppy is that it was uploaded to youtube, which doesn't have the best sound quality

  • what brand are your drums they sound really good

  • @gady100 Thanks, they're Peace. It's actually a low end kit, haha but with the right tuning any kit can sound good

  • how much did you pay for the mics??

  • @produccionesmiranejo the kick mic was 70 the snare mic was 100 and I think the overhead was about 100.

  • What kind of snare, size, heads, muffling, snarewire r u using? Killer snare sound!!

  • for me the kick is so loud.:) nice snare sound.^^

  • imovie hd - 240p hahahahahaha

  • @evenstevens280 sounds like a bit of natural room reverb to me

  • u probly should have brought the overhead a little closer to bring out the toms a little more and just blend the snare mic in for a nice mix!

  • @BillyTalentRocks2010 dont forget a fuckload of reverb

  • @evenstevens280 it seems that he added a little reverb to it

  • Personally, I feel like the room just may be far deadened.. I mean, maybe thats just me, but I think you can get better recordings when you lets the air in the room itself breathe a little. Makes it sound more raw, but keeping composure at the same time! Good vid though. Take out the verb! It sorta sounds like a glam recording, or just POWER drums hahaha. Good job though!

  • too much reverb.

the kick compression is pretty weird sounding, you might want to play with the attack time a little bit.

also, turn the kick and snare down and turn the whole thing up. the toms are barely audible.

  • @BillyTalentRocks2010 you should leave compression for the bass drum if that. What kind of EQ is it? just a high pass filter?
