As part of its ongoing public education campaign, the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace (CDW) today launched a new television ad that identifies the positions of Minnesota U.S. Senate candidates Norm Coleman and Al Franken on workplace privacy and the mis-named Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), legislation introduced in Congress that threatens a worker's right to vote for a union by private ballot.

The ad, developed by nationally known media strategist Mike Murphy, is the second spot in the series that uses a widely recognized character who will be easily identifiable to viewers and will use humor to reinforce the need to protect private ballots for workers.

Wrong. Only after the majority of workers sign up for the union. Why would you need a ballot then? Simple, to give more time to attack the union.

Your comments show your ignorance to the way the organizing process works today and how the Employee Free Choice Act would change it. The Act puts the control back in the hands of workers and imposes penalties for employers who today get away with intimidation, coercion, and harassment. It puts some teeth back in to the National Labor Relations Act. Period. Cards are collected no differently under EFCA than they are today. Get educated man.

I know that an organized work force scars the hell out of you 3% guys or you $250k and up guys. Companies that move overseas should be taxed to hell and companies that stay in the US should have vary low taxes. If companies move overseas for the cheep labor the items that they send back to the states should be taxed to hell.

I wouldn't have a problem with a "secret ballot", but it HAS TO be a secret from EMPLOYERS too. Companies can't hire Jackson-Lewis to bust the union, fire workers who are union friendly, interview to captive audiences and still claim that the ballot is "secret".

Ok, time for an insiders perspective on unions. I am a member of the UFCW because I am working in a grocery store to help pay my way through school for my second degree. Because I am technically part-time I don't get anything but I still pay dues. Joining the UFCW is a condition of employment even though I didn't want to. Union contract says that I get a 15 minute break every 3 hours but I don't get to take it. Managers and senior staff do get benefits and set hours.
