@velusumana People perform kavadi to basically turn off their conscious thinking mind in order to perceive God's presence within themselves. Hence the trance-inducing music, spear through the tongue (can't talk). It is also a form of prayaschitta (penance). The whole point of it is self-improvement and striving to feel and know God, be it Amman, Murugaa, etc.

What the god has to do with this ignorant torture I don't know.People with very low self esteem always afraid of unknown powers and think that god will forgive them by self torture.God has nothing to do with that
