NOTE: Must have anaglyph glasses (red/cyan lenses) to properly view this video.

Mirror's Edge being played on the PC with PhysX enabled in stereoscopic 3D (anaglyph) using the IZ3D driver. The stereo setting used is "Optimized Anaglyph" which turns all red-colored textures in the game yellow and dulls any blues (this is done as to not interfere with the red/cyan stereo effects used for anaglyph glasses as they would conflict with each other).

Using anaglyph as a stereo isn't perfect. Primarily, you can't make both near and distant objects perfectly 3D--you must give and take. This is done through seperation and convergance. (I'm not going to explain how these work.) By adjusting the seperation and convergance you can make near, middle or far objects appear 3D. If near objects are 3D then most distant objects will be out of focus and vice versa. With a game like Mirror's Edge, I made distant objects appear 3D (since the game is based on vertigo) so anything up-close will be out of focus.

Additionally, anaglyph is an "outdated" stereo mode and not only skews the video's/game's color palette but isn't --as-- effective in making things appear 3D as current stereo modes used today (think of the "RealD" 3D experience you often see in movie theaters these days).

Computer Specs:
Pentium Quad Core Processor
2 NVidia 8800GT graphic cards using SLI
2GB RAM (I know, this is seriously under-powered)

There may be times when the frame rate drops below 30 FPS or temporarily freezes (mainly during PhysX-used moments). This is because of two reasons: 1) My current RAM is failry low and 2) when playing a game in stereo 3D you are essentially processing the game twice (to create the 3D effect) which means the computer must process EVERYTHING twice simultaneously. This becomes taxing on the computer, hence why it may choke at times.

  • @dmcprince1 As in my video description:

  • awesome keep making vids

  • pretty difficult to process

    must be my glasses

  • @ratiocinator Oh that's cool! I tried playing Fallout 3 in 3D yesterday with the iZ3D drivers but couldn't get it to work very well. I'm gonna try Mirror's Edge and L4D at some point too! I've never played SotC before, but I've heard it's good! Will it only support that new kind of 3D (I forgot what it's called) or will it support the old styles such as anaglyph too?

  • @TheDraykez Yes I have! I've played this, Minecraft and Left 4 Dead in anaglyph (red/cyan) 3D with great success. It just so happens my folks purchased a 3D-ready TV (active 3D) that'll arrive to their house next Tuesday which is the same day Shadow of the Colossus HD comes out on the PS3 (which the game supports 3D). Needless to say, I'm going straight over there to play that game and soil my pants in excitement as a result.

  • @ratiocinator It's okay, I totally forgot there are different types of 3D and I was expecting a different type than what you're showing. I can see that the images in the backgrund do 'pop out' a little, so it does work! That's why I removed my comment anyway. Have you seen Minecraft in 3D? My god, it's absolutely incredible. It uses the red/cyan anaglyph just like this but the 3D is nearly perfect!

  • @TheDraykez No worries, it's because of YouTube's compression. This video uncompressed looks amazing but after YouTube gets through processing it has a ton of artifacts which ruin much of the crisp, clean 3D view.

  • Amazing.

  • @ratiocinator OMG..

  • @BillyTheMilkMan Guaranteed 30 fps at all times, plus 3D support. Also will have bonus content including never-before-seen videos for both Shadow of the Colossus and ICO, plus some new footage of "The Last Guardian." This re-release will be out September 2011.
