The Ent and the Entwife

Ent:

When spring unfolds the beechen-leaf and sap is in the bough,
When light is on the wild-wood stream, and wind is on the brow,
When stride is long, and breath is deep, and keen the mountain air,
Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is fair!

Entwife:

When Spring is come to garth and field, and corn is in the blade,
When blossom like a shining snow is on the orchard laid,
When sun and shower upon the earth with fragrance fill the air,
I'll linger here, and will not come, because my land is fair!

Ent:

When Summer lies upon the world, and in a noon of gold
Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves the dreams of trees unfold,
When woodland halls are green and cool, and wind is in the West,
Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is best!

Entwife:

When Summer warms the hanging fruit and burns the berry brown;
When straw is gold, and ear is white, and harvest comes to town;
When honey spills, and apple swells, though wind be in the West,
I'll linger here beneath the Sun, because my land is best!

Ent:

When Winter comes, the winter wild that hill and wood shall slay;
When trees shall fall and starless night devour the sunless day;
When wind is in the deadly East, then in the bitter rain
I'll look for thee, and call to thee; I'll come to thee again!

Entwife:

When Winter comes, and singing ends; when darkness falls at last;
When broken is the barren bough, and light and labour past;
I'll look for thee, and wait for thee, until we meet again:
Together we will tkae the road beneath the bitter rain!

Both:

Together we will take the road that leads into the West,
And far away will find a land where both our hearts may rest.

The Ent and Entwife written by J.R.R Tolkien and sung by the Tolkien Ensemble
In the book (the two towers) the song is sung by Treebeard who explains that it is an old Elf Song about the Ents and their search for the Entwives.

  • The Entwives moved into the brown lands where they tended magnificent gardens.

    When Sauron arose in the second age he burned those lands reducing them to desserts.

    What happened to the Entwives after that the Ents doesn´t know however it is hinted or rumored that perhaps they escaped into the shire, since Sam mentions that his cousin once saw a walking tree.

    Later Treebeard says that the Shire indeed sound like a place the entwives might like.

  • @Erikjust this makes me very happy

  • Beautiful

  • fuck this is sad....so favoriting it.

  • I find it to be sad that the Ents never found their Ent-Wives. I hope that eventually the Ent-Wives will find their ways back to their husbands. The Ents seem so unhappy without them.

  • anyone know where I could get a piano tab for this song?

  • @Erikjust

    Old forest then?

  • This is so beautiful <3

    The Ents are one of my fave charactors in the whole story along with the hobbits If only man could live in peace with the trees and not destroy them everyday :(. It makes me so sad... We need Ents in real life to protect the forests! I'd love to meet an Ent!

  • @werewolfFAN28 At least you don't wish that the shire was like the earth! :D

  • @werewolfFAN28 If I may paraphrase Thorin Oakenshield...If more of us were like the Hobbits, valuing good food, cheer, and the warmth of our hearths and families over gold and power...this would be a much happier world.

  • Search for:

    חיזרי אליי - שירם של העצנים - טולקין

    to watch a hebrew version of the song.
