El Gato, formed in early 1995, has wrapped-up and released its third recording and first full-length album, We're Birds. Mark Pirro, former Tripping Daisy bassist/current Polyphonic Spree bassist, stood in as producer. The record hit the streets on January 15, 2002 on the heels of the band's preview single, The Christmas Single. The single topped the best seller charts at the Indie store Good Records, and prompted a sold out CD release party at the popular Dallas venue, The Gypsy Tea Room.
El Gato's non-traditional approach to song writing and constant sonic experimentation has caught the attention of local and national media and music enthusiasts. "The Dallas Observer stated, "We're Birds is a breathless album, with the naiveté of a kid singing along with his favorite song and the confidence to pile an orchestra on top of the Marshall Stacks, Rock and Pop written in capital letters on a billboard (Dallas Observer, Jan. 24-30, 2002).
The band's previous release, "Everybody's a Piñata," (June 1998) earned them invitations to perform at SXSW and CMJ music conferences as well as critical acclaim. "What ultimately makes this music beautiful and inviting is that El Gato never strays too far from placidity. Even as the music gathers strength and speed, working itself into a sonic disturbance, the players always latch on to something unpredictably pristine." ( Kelso Jacks, CMJ Music Report, March 29, 1999).
This is so pretty, haunting and full of longing and catharsis...
The mood is not all-encompassing; though there may be nostalgia, the song seems to suggest that we all experience these feelings in our lives, and that we must move on.
