Gaito's heart was more or less frozen. Even though Sara meant a lot to him, he had made up his mind to stay in his castle (and presumably die, judging by the size of those boulders which were falling).

I think if he totally understood, he would have told Sara (and even possibly the Dark Lovers) to gett the eff out of the collapsing castle. :( But at least he finally understood what it meant to be loved, so maybe that would have helped him heal in the afterlife. I think it probably did.

That might be in the manga, but they would most likely have died in the anime because the castle was collapsing. Watch the pieces get bigger and bigger between 0:24 and 1:14. The girls weren't going to leave Gaito alone, Gaito wasn't going to leave the castle, and nobody could have survived boulders like that falling on them.
