In the book-which the New York Times calls "useful" and the policy recommendations "logical"-Dr. Jones explains how a growing sanctuary for insurgents in Pakistan and a collapsing government in Kabul catalyzed the Taliban resurgence. Examining what has worked thus far-and what hasn't-Dr. Jones argues that we must take a radically new approach to the war if the United States is to avoid the disastrous fate that has befallen every world power to enter the region, from Alexander the Great to the Soviet Union.

@blkpanther08 read the book! The reason we are over there are because they have had serious trouble taking care of themselves. I am not agreeing with the war, but Afghanistan has been manipulated by different radical groups for a long time ranging from communist to radical fundamentalist Muslim insurgents. There has been civil wars since the early 1900's and never has been able to decide on a governing body in a democratic fashion.

Afghans themselves know much better their own culture and how to deal with their problems. The problem lies in the western powers trying to impose "their" solution to the Afghan problem, while the neighboring countries are taking advantage of the situation and meddling in the internal affairs. They need to cut off the hands of the neighbors. Only then there can be a united Afghan force that will be ready to tackle the problems. Otherwise NATO could be there forever and still achieve nothing.
