Hurricane Bill passed through the day before leaving the New England coast with plenty of swell and beautiful offshore conditions, sunny skies, and the hot summer sun.
Joni and Nate met you this morning knowing the conditions would be favorable for their unique tintype photos, so Joni begin shooting a couple of frames, portraits of surfers, and came across Andrew Brooke. Andrew posed for the shot, and Joni opened her lens and the light which entered her camera obsecura painted a image of what it saw.
Andrew, Joni and a developer named Nate took the tin plate which the image had been imbedded onto to Nate's care where he than used a chemical solution to develop the tintype. Andrews photo magically appears giving all of the onlookers, including myself as I filmed it a real sense of how and where photography's roots stem from.
Nate explains to us that this particular process is very rarely done today, and that Joni is one of the few practicing photographers of our time who uses this type of photography in a modern art form.

  • @redpillftw I thought of that, easier said than done! I guess if I had a hot plate on the workbench maybe. In the meantime, I've got it pretty much figured out how to do it and get results. Always room for improvement of course.

  • @RCAvhstape Keep your plate warm.

  • That is cool, I've been trying to do this myself on a 4x5 peice of metal using a dry-plate gel emulsion, but I can't figure out how to spread the emulsion evenly. As soon as I pour it on it sets up before I can spread it.
