Most of them do, but that wasn't my point. The ending of the original four games marks, about, 1/3 into the entire .hack story, which spans across many games, Anime's, and Manga's.
The major entries into the .hack// series go as follows:
AI Buster > SIGN > IMOQ (original four games) > Legend of the Twilight > ROOTS > GU > LINK
There are other entries as well, but none that add extreme amounts to the overall plot as far as I know.

He was probably referring to the fact that Aura being born meant that it was the beginning of what Harold originally intended, and the true beginning of "The World" itself. What you play through in the original four games is kind of like a Beta, seeing as how Aura isn't really born yet, which was why "The World" existed at all. Kite would've had no reason to think there would be an R:2, although the creators may have doubled the meaning knowing they were making more content.

I almost bawled when Elk sacrificed himself when I played through. Mia was enough D; This game series is probably the only one to have made me cry then, and still do today.
