I DO NOT OWN THIS NOR DID I MAKE IT. This video was made by Cyrus Lum, who works with the crew of SP 4449 to produce videos and dvds. This particular documentary talks about the future of the 4449 and the plans to build a new home for it and the other two Portland steam locomotives. But they need your help to make it happen. So I encourage you to go to the 4449 website and click the "donate" button. You'll be glad you did. Keep living history living! Visit 4449.com and ORHF.org for more info.

  • UPDATE May 2011: With the help of your donations, ORHF has raised $3.3 million of the $4.7 million needed to start construction of the new facility! ORHF would like to start construction in July to meet the 2012 deadline before the engines are kicked out. But they still have $1.4 million to raise. They're getting very close and need donations now more than ever. Donate online or buy tickets for the upcoming 70th Anniversary trips. Thank you, and remember, we can't do this without you.

  • yeah i read on some website that in the future the will try and build a railroad museum and place all of ORHF's locomotives to be put on display, in other words they would retire 4449 along with the othe other ORHF historical locomotives, i got sad when i read that.

  • @Barricade360 That is only partly true. Yes, the new facility (in the future) will be a railroad museum where people can view the engines up close when they're not running. But the engines will still be operational and will still continue to do excursions.

  • I don't understand why UP wants 4449 out of there property when they themselves have a steam program and 4449 has run with them in double head excursions. I find it hypocritical of the UP to kick those people out of there because just like the UP steam program the SP steam program is trying to preserve history. All this is causing is lots of gray hairs and anxiety for those hardworking volunteers. I hope the 4449 and its crew the best!

  • @Bassfanatic94 UP is just trying to expand their yard to allow more trains to roll in and out of Portland. Therefore, unfortunatly, the Brooklyn Roundhouse has to go. But it's not like the UP is just kicking them out without help. The doubleheader run was also partly a fundraiser for the new facility being built. The UP also helped out at this year's Holiday Express fundraiser. So UP is not the bad guy; they play a vital roll in getting the new facility built.

  • More and more I think the people of Portland are realizing just how amazingly lucky we are to have machines like this in our beautiful city. People also need to be aware of just how fragile the balance really is. Milwaukee Road 261 was just returned to static display with essentially no warning and without a new home, SP 4449, SP&S 700 and OR&N 197 could be right back at Oaks Park, exposed to the elements and vandalism. Education of the public on these matters is crucial for future preservation.

  • Wish they could use the Sacramento Shops. They r going to be an operational museum. The 4449 does belong in CA...and will always be its home.

  • Why not have UP pay for it they are kicking them out so they should pay.

  • @JD41796 orhf.org and 4449.com

  • @Bassfanatic94 Steam creates gray hairs and anxieaty for any group maintaining and operating them. Its an art all on its own, and im proud to be a part of it! Im not with 4449, but I know what it takes to get it on the road.

  • If for some reason the plans are delayed, I'm sure all the museums across the US would volunteer to help these engines, from the California Railroad Museum to Steamtown, Stausburg, and I'm sure even the B&O Railroad Museum would volunteer to help these engines.

  • @Jared1452 As far as I know, the UP gave them until 2012 to vacate the roundhouse. This works out perfectly since the majority of the new facility should be completed by that time. I think they understand that it would be impossible and unfair to kick them out before hand.
