Recorded again during 1990, prior to the hiring of NZR Garratt locos to work the colliery branch. The clip shows one of the Wankie Colliery Company's own 4-8-2 tender engines (ex RR 19th class so far as I'm aware) thrashing up the long incline from the exchange sidings at Thompson Junction with a rake of empties

  • The honest answer is I don't know, sorry. I gather some former ex NRZ Garratts found work here for sometime.

  • It was many years ago now 'beenyoni', but I seem to recall standing on an embankment of another trackbed.

  • What a place. If I lived neer there I would be there every day. How much steam action is there nowadays?

  • Majestic!!! you filmed this from the other railway line??? I presume this should be loco No. 4 and is no longer in use, only No. 10 and 11 were functional as of 2008

  • The Wankie 19th were actually supplied new by NBL.

The last one to be used was last steamed in July 2001...

    Thanks for these clips.
