My honey bees going about their business storing honey in the "supers" which are the boxes you put on top of the brood box. They are being calm for once I think as I get used to handling them they are calming down & realising I mean them no harm.

  • Its not great is it? I've bred another queen hopefully this year but I can't get a dry day with no wind to check in the hive to see how she's doing.

  • I had heard of this - thank you

  • How beautiful. Another year with a lack of bees. I've deliberately planted a bee garden and again no bees. The rain has been torrential for the last 2 days, like a mini monsoon.

  • Do you know the Whittier poem "Telling The Bees?" that it is necessary to tell the bees of death or they will fly away.

    Just the same as a month before,--

    Before them, under the garden wall,

    Forward and back,

    Went drearily singing the chore-girl small,

    Draping each hive with a shred of black.

    Trembling, I listened: the summer sun

    Had the chill of snow;

    For I knew she was telling the bees of one

    Gone on the journey we all must go!

  • Hope its a good year for honey.

  • We had a swarm last year and I helped catch it, very interesting experience, I would attempt it on my own another time. The bees were so tranquil, the swarm was on the branch of an crab apple tree. You could have touched them with your hand they weren't remotely agressive.

  • I don't know so much about bumblebees, they tend to gather nectar/pollen from different flowers to the honey bees in my garden anyway.

  • What do you know about bumblebees? I find them asleep in my lavender.
