The Ludwigslust castle park, stretching out over 120 hectares is the largest nature park in Mecklenburg. During every season, the park invites you to go for a long walk. Extensive meadows, shining waters and many old and rare tree species such as a snowdrop tree, a swamp cypress, a mammouth tree and different magnolias, offer a wonderful sight to the visitor.
The baroque park was designed during the construction time of the small hunting house from 1731 to 1735. As there isn't much water available for such a great park, a 28 km long channel was built from 1756 to 1760, bringing up the water for fountains and waterfalls inside the park and for the cascades, located in front of the castle. The pressure that's necessary is given by the natural slope of the channel.
The park was extended again and again. In the middle of 19th century, between 1852 - 1860, the Prussian landscape gardener, Peter Joseph Lenné, completely redesigned the park.
