Chris Bernau was great as Alan. I liked Ron Raines, too, but for me Bernau WAS Alan Spaulding. Some of my favorite scenes from GL were between Bernau and Zaslow. Two great actors. RIP.

The original alan and alex unfortunately did not have the "time" to nurture their roles like the ron raines and marj did. both duos are perfect within their own rights

I must agree... the original Alan was a good actor, but to me, Ron Raines really nails the role. I love Beverlee as well, a terrific actress, but to me Ron Raines and Marj Dusay are the perfect Spaulding duo. When they play in a scene together, you can really feel the brother/sister connection between the two of them, even if they are trying to kill each other in the scene.

Ron Raines, the current actor playing Alan has been in that role for 14 years. Chris Bernau, the original Alan, 1977-1984 and 1986-1988, carried this aristocratic demeanor to his portrayal...a smug, arrogance at times, that is lacking in the Ron Raines portrayal. Bernau's performance as Alan is quintessential and Raines' performance builds on that.
